If looking at a USB NAS, get a USB 3.0. Much faster then the standard USB 2.0.
Also, unless you're doing a raid, a single drive would be fine.
I just picked up a Seagate 3TB ext HD USB 3.0 for $150 at Best Buy. Then later, if you want to upgrade, you can just pull the drive out of the housing and add it to one of the NAS units linked above.

Having suffered many drive lossses, I will not store on single drives. If you are going to have any photos stored on it, or music ripped from CDs you no longer have, get RAID. RAID 1 is a mirrored drive setup, so you get two drives, but only have the capacity of one... but both drives have the same data on them. Drives are cheap... and with terabytes of storage, you can keep thousands of photos, songs and movies. Using 260GB of 2TB available... I have 88 Movies, almost 2000 songs, and almost 20000 full resolution photos.

The advantage of a NAS over USB attached storage is NAS is available to any machine on your network, and typically comes with a DLNA (allows you to share to TVs and DVD/BluRay players network attached with DNLA streaming functions) server, FTP server, and other functions for remote access.

I agree, just giving out more options.
