We used them last weekend at the MORE race to talk from the chase truck to the car, and they worked great. instead of setting up the mobile, I just grabbed the UV-82 and the magnet antanna, and we were able to talk to the car through the whole 26 mile loop from start finish. Having the dual freq was great, we could listen to the MORE relay and monitor the freq for the car at the same time.
We also used them in the trucks on the way to and from the race, and it was really nice to have communication without picking up the cell phones. Radio in the cup holder, and speaker/mic laying across my lap. We heard some interesting conversation between two truckers on the BFG relay freq, lol.

I have 2 RH-5R radios purchased from Rugged Radios. They are the UV-5RE Plus pre loaded with Rugged's standard list of 19 race channels, 16 GMRS, and 7 WX weather channels. I purchased them for highway car to car communication for a Grand Canyon, Sedona trip we are doing next month with another couple.
With the stock antenna they SUCK! If you are separated by more than a few car lengths communication is spotty. I see 2 antenna options #1 a 14.5" screw on or #2 a external magnetic base antenna with a coax cable that screws on to the radio. I'm not sure how comfortable the other couple will be with a coax run across the dash, out the door and the magnetic antenna stuck to their hood. I also need some input on what channels to run? I was going to pick 2 and we can use the A-B button to switch between them (the other couple are not radio savvy) Should I pick 2 GMRS? 2 Race? 1 of each? What do you think. We have the after market antenna for ours, the 14.5" and it works just fine, plenty of range. We never used the smaller antenna.
Try that and see what happens.

Have you every used them car to car (truck & trailer to Moho) on the freeway. I would like to travel up to 1/4 mile apart. Sounds easy but it's tougher than you think.
I only get one chance to get this right. It's hero or zero |
