Default outside BBQ build, concrete countertop

Figured I'd throw out here too. Always nice to get other ideas, especially since I've changed my mind numerous times to improve design.

Started thinking countertop, was going to do flagstone, tiled granite/marble and also thought about premade granite and silestone. Granite/Silestone = average 50-60 bucks a sq/ft after adding the edging and drop. Flagstone pieces are about 180 bucks for a 2'x4' section. Countertop measures out at 62 sq/ft. So the math for all these are anywhere from 2k up to 3500 bucks

So, concrete it is, for durability, look, price and easy maintenance. 62 sq/ft is about 20 bags @ 3 bucks a bag, so 60 bucks in concrete, maybe a 100 bucks in forms/base wood, 200 for a polisher and another 100 in tint/stain/sealer. 500 bucks sounds a lot better.

Going to pour a sample piece tonight, half with just straight undied concrete and half with a tint color like these, http://www.daviscolors.com/?gclid=CK...EoL_Q#concrete, just not sure which color, and picked up four sample stains for afterwards, like these. http://www.rcpblock.com/stain_silicashield.html, so with the variation, I should be able to come up with 20 different colors/tints. Polishing will be done with a wet polisher like http://www.amazon.com/CCGRINDPOLSET-...5884289&sr=1-7.

The cutting stone will allow me to pull the aggragrate out of the concrete, sanding disks from 50 grit up to 3000 grit, should shine up nicely.

Here is were we are at now,

I like the concrete counter idea for the outside. Looks great!

poured two samples yesterday, one untinted, one tinted with a "buff" color. Will let them sit up for a week or so. Ordered a polisher yesterday and will attempt to sand/polish them and then stain to see what we like.

How many other suggestions (other than mine), did you get for the same counter surface?

(Suggestion); A buddy of mine has a BBQ island similar to your's. Originally his concrete top wasn't sealed, and he had major ant problems. After sealing with some sort of clear coat, the ant problem went away. (Just say'n).
