We're seriously considering solar panels on the house. We got our first bid to do the work based on our needs and energy consumption. Jeff, Gary and anyone else who has crunched the numbers....... could you take a look at this bid and tell me if purchasing this set up as bid is worth my while..... or should I look for a more competative bid?
It looks like my average monthly PGE electric bill is $65/month. I don't know how they came up with $83/month ($1004/yr) With 10 panels there is a 77% PG&E Bill offset My net investment is $8316 to own it. Payback period 8.7 years ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Howie, if you are going to go the expense of installing 10 panels, and expect to pay $230 annually, why not pop for about 2 more panels and zero the monthly bill? That was our thinking, and last year we paid SCE something like $40 for the year. Also, I think the ROI should be somewhere closer to 6 years, as ours was set up.
Pricing looks about right, and don't let ANYBODY talk you into a long term lease!! It's a real rip-off!

Howie, we just got our SCE bill today, and we may need to take out a 2nd mortgage to pay those assholes! Dunno how we're gonna come up w/a $1.32 to send them. This, after running the A/C pretty steady a couple of weeks ago when the temps were hovering around 90, but more importantly, the humidity was averaging 50-65% daily.
Do your self a favor, and get the additional panels, and kiss your monthly bill adios!!

Gary,
Thanks for your insight. I've got 3 solar companies coming out to size up our needs and they all requested our PG&E usage which was downloadable from their website. They follow up with an inspection of the property. Reading between the lines, it looks like our electric bills need to be at least $100/month in order for the solar system to pencil out. We'll see how this pans out.

Stupid Question: you can't run your house off the solar if the power from pg&e was to go out for an extended period of time, right?

I think you could if you had a battery back up system

Is it possible to put solar just to power the A/C?
