Speedweek at Salton Sea (boats)

The weekend of December 6th the Salton Sea hosted a speedweek shoot out geared at breaking world speed records for a 1 mile run in a boat. Salton Sea is probably the best place in the country to do this for two reasons, the lake is a salt water lake so it is more dense providing more bouyancy for the boats and because it's below sea level the air is more dense which leads to bigger HP.

None the less, here's a cool video that details not only the event, but they did a really cool job of capturing the essence of the local culture.

Those guys launched from the North Shore Marina, and I love boats, but I was almost more interested in the footage he captured of the area. It's really kind of sad to contrast that area in its current state compared to what it was 30-40 years ago and what it could have become.

I can't beleive that there running $100k+ boats on one of the largest cesspool on earth. If the speed doesn't bite you in the ass, the water will definately kill you.

Bottom line is....you're right, I'd never drop anything in that water!

Bob Teague's 77 Amsoil boat is probably $500k or more. It ran 131 with twin Merc 525s

That silver/blue/orange Eliminator was probably north of $400k, especially with the motor package, it hit 147 running twin 700s. That kind of speed on Havasu is usually aquired with twin 1100s
